Introduction:

In 1972, the department of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) was established at the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (then National University of Iran) to train students in industrial hygiene Bachelors program.  In 2004, the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU) established the first program in OHS at the Masters and in 2011 the PhD program was pioneered. In August 2019, according to a decree of the Presidium of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, the former Department of Industrial Safety of the School of Health, Safety and Environment was merged with the Department of Occupational Health. The Department of Industrial Safety of the former School of Health, Safety and Environment started accepting students in the field of industrial safety in 1983.

 

Mission:

The most important mission of the Department of the Occupational Health and Safety Engineering at the SBMU School of Public Health and Safety is to train students who would be capable of foreseeing, evaluating, and controlling risk factors at workplace related to different aspects of occupations including physical, psychological, and social health of the work force at the national level. Our widen goal is to extend such goals through the research to national/ international level to establish itself as center to provide both preventive and treatment solutions.

  • Assisting & actively participating in providing and preparing national health, safety, and environmental standards;

  • Recognizing necessary applications and processes in order to control pollutants and risks;
  • Recognition and utilizing facilities, machinery for evaluating and assessing risk factors at workplace;
  • Designing systems to control workplace risk factors;
  • Familiarization with methods to evaluate and manage occupational health and safety
